I don't know if there is any norwegian people reading this blog, but I will post this article, anyway!
Today, is Carnaval!
Maybe when I am talking about Carnaval, the reader may think I am refering to the brazilian one, with lots of half-naked people, samba, lights and colours., thousands of people on the streets celebrating. But it isn't...it's a more simple, modest and traditional one... In a village, lost somewhere in time and space in the distant and forgotten Eastern Portugal!
An ancient pagan tradition that is being kept for centuries. It is said that is a celtic tradition, that remained in our folklore for thousands of years! The day when it is celebrated the ending of winter and the Spring's return! It's the day of the year, when one can be whatever he/she wants. To prank family, friends and random people, under a very nice disguise!
Across the country, people come out dressed as the most strange, funny and cool thing (and I mean THING) a person can imagine. Some dress as the opposite sex, witches, devils, fairies, etc etc etc...you name it! On this day, you can see how people can be creative, since these eyes have seen people disguised as... Bathtubs? Street Lamps(with real light!!!!)? and whatever you remember, it is allowed to do and to dress, today!
One of the most beautiful traditions I know of is the "Caretos", where you can find more information about them here: http://caretosdepodence.no.sapo.pt/inenglish.html and some pictures http://caretosdepodence.no.sapo.pt/entrudo.html http://caretosdepodence.no.sapo.pt/fotos.html
This tradition must be kept alive, for it is one of the few echoes from our past!
